Does Violet Regret Having the Feed Installed

  • Guys, we've spent considerable money converting the Les Paul Forum to this new XenForo platform, and we have ongoing monthly operating expenses. THE "DONATIONS" TAB IS NOW WORKING, AND WE WOULD APPRECIATE ANY DONATIONS YOU CAN MAKE TO KEEP THE LES PAUL FORUM GOING! Thank you!

Do you regret having a bone nut installed?
Also, do they take a while to "settle in", IOW do they sound better a few weeks (or more) after installation?

I'm considering having a bone nut installed on one or both of my Historics. :hmm
My number one sounds soooo good to me I'm afraid to change the nut.
The main thing I'm after is greater low string clarity (which was greatly improved by the MapleFlame Mod!). It's a warm-sounding LP, but with lots of overtones. The Mapleflame Mod has opened it up a lot. Now I want More!
(Please, no posts about how the nut only affects open strings).

Thanks,
PG

Try it on one guitar to see how you like it.

Don;
Yeah, I'm thinking about trying it my #2. Even tho' it's on the bright side, I'm hoping the bone nut will bring out more overtones.

to my understanding the nut will only change the open string tones, so how much would a nut change make a difference??

i got a RS 4/6 nylon nut installed on my LP and had a complete setup fret dress done at the same time, i couldnt tell a difference in tone of the nut, but the guitar played alot better after, but im guessing thats due to the pro setup.

but id like to hear your input

I'm one who believes that the nut affects the tone over all, whether open or fretted. After all, the speaking length of the string is resting on the nut and the bridge saddles. I have an RS 4/6 nut on my R9 Makeover and one in reserve should I ever refret it. I would go with a Nylon nut. Even Gibson finally got the message on the difference the Nylon makes with their 50th Anniversary R9s. The 50s guitars had Nylon nuts NOT bone. And let's face it, Classical guitars sound killer with Nylon strings because Nylon imparts a certain desirabe tone.

Would you say that about the tail piece?

well i went from a Zinc TP to a light weight aluminum and definitely felt the difference.

maybe the change i had wasnt very pronounced, the nut swap wasnt done quickly as i did with the TP, it stayed at the tech for a week, and the different brand of new strings made a difference sound it was kinda hard to tell, but in my experience i dont feel or hear a change. or if there was any it was very little.

I don't know about "clarity" in regards to having a bone nut installed. I do know that upgrading the nut in most new Gibsons makes for better tuning and a more stable guitar... tuning wise. The same could be said with just going over the stock nut, say in a Historic, and cutting/finishing the slots right.
Almost anything's an improvement over the stock Gibson nuts and work they do on them.

I switched out the stock Gibson nut for a bone nut on the R8 after playing the guitar for a month and struggling with the tuning problems and general pain-in-the-ass of the poorly cut Gibson nut.
I didn't notice any tonal change at all with the new bone nut, but it's cut properly and the guitar stays rock-solid in tune now, and that makes it totally worth it.

No regrets here, but I don't think fretted notes had any significant change. The only reason I had a bone nut installed is because the original had a spacing problem between hi e & b, and the luthier suggested bone. Open strings became clearer & have a little more punch.

I have had tremendous luck with Walrus and Elephant tusk. Both petrified and Goverment regulated. The Juniors love the Walrus, and my LP's like the elephant. I also had Phil at PhilTone put a Nylon on my 69 Goldtop and it fits that guitar wonderful. I think what your going after should dictate what your going to use.

FWIW; I had a bone nut on my R8 Historic Makeover which was fitted by HM. A beautiful nut, but I decided to replace it with a NOS 4/6 nylon since it had been worn a little low and I was getting buzz on the first fret.

I just got it back today from the luthier with new nylon nut, and I'm over the moon with the change! Open notes are definitely a little crisper and "zingier", and I could swear fretted notes are too, although only by a very small margin.

That's not a knock on a bone nut, but I really felt it took the guitar just that tiny little bit closer to a vintage burst, in that it seemed to "open up" the sound of the guitar. With all the upgrades (Historic Makeover package A, all Pigtail hardware, MapleFlame mod, Throbak pickups and now the 4/6 nylon nut) the guitar now sounds absolutely astounding, with a clarity I have never heard in any other Gibson I've tried.

Steve ..does Phil stock nylon blanks or did you supply it ? ...I'm getting a new nut put on my historic 335 this Sat and was actually considering nylon over bone this time.

If you're not already try a set of nickle plated strings as oppossed to pure nickle.
I've always used pure nickle on my Gibsons until I tries the nickle plateds.
I was quite surprised.

As far as the bone nut goes I've done it on two guitars and was happy.

I had Dan Erlewine install a bone nut; but with everything else he did, nut and saddles precisely cut to match the neck radius, refret, ect. it's impossible for me to really determine just how it factors in.
