Retail
John Lewis Partnership
Summer placements last six weeks and give you practical experience on the shop floor and an insight into the world of retail management, paying £310 per week. Places are full up for this summer already but applications for 2015 open in September.

Law
Nabarro
Offers 55 work experience placements and landing one is the only way to secure a training contract with the firm. Apply to schemes in Sheffield and London for a three-week placement and receive up to £275 a week (£225 in Sheffield). Open to all undergraduates, applications for summer 2014 are now closed but will reopen for the 2015 intake in November – so pencil that date in.

Shoosmiths
Like Nabarro, applications for the 40+ summer vacation placements are now closed for this year, but will reopen in early December 2014 for the 2015 intake. Trainees are paid £250 a week and will experience a week in the life of a trainee solicitor, working on real case files and attending client meetings.

Tech
IBM
Tech and business positions are available to those studying a related degree course. Participants in the 12-week Extreme Blue Internship are provided with university accommodation and a £15,000 salary pro rata.

To many (and we're not just talking tech-heads), Google is the place to work. Short-term work placements and experiences are hard to come by, but there are still plenty of ways you can add Google to your CV, from coding to designing the logo.

PlayStation
Competition is tight: one-week work experience placements may be offered to exceptional school students, with applications accepted from October for placements in 2015, and offers made in January. An equally select few will have the chance to intern at PlayStation. Engineering
Rolls Royce
Summer placements lasting 10-12 weeks are available in the UK.( sites in Derby, Bristol, East Kilbride or Sunderland, among others) as well as Asia, North America and Europe. Placements are only open to university students who have a strong academic record at school and are on target to achieve at least a 2:1 degree.

BP
First-year uni students can get a taster of life at BP via its Discovery Weeks, held at Easter, to learn about different roles if they are considering a career with BP. As well as a strong academic record, applicants must undergo verbal and numerical reasoning tests and a telephone interview.
Work experience programmes are also available to school age students too.

BBC
Over 1,000 work experience slots are available a year, in various UK locations. Lasting between three and 20 days, placements are available to individuals aged 18 or over, but there are also some for 14-17 year olds. You'll have to apply online – and can only do so with one department, so choose carefully.

L'Oréal
There are 23 summer internships up for grabs, each lasting 10 weeks. The posts are mostly in marketing, in the company's head office in Hammersmith, west London; Wales (in finance) or Manchester. Successful applicants will receive a £18,000 salary pro rata, as well as holiday days and discounted products.

Accountancy and Finance
PwC
Placements are open to undergraduates who must first first participate in PWC's three-day talent academy, which includes skills sessions, recruitment and business awareness workshops. Over 800 competitively salaried positions are available, though you'll have to jump through significant recruitment hoops including tests, application forms and so on.

Deloitte
Spring into Deloitte is a two-day residential course that runs in Deloitte's London, Birmingham, Manchester and Reading offices. It's offered to first-year students (or second-year if doing a four-year course). Networking and skills sessions aim to give students an insight into what working at Deloitte would be like, with the opportunity to be fast-tracked on to Deloitte's summer vacation scheme, if successful in an interview afterwards.

EY
Held in its London office, the three-day EY skills academy is for year 12 students contemplating the world of business. Interactive workshops and the chance to meet senior people from EY will give a taste of what working for a leading global business brand would be like. Applications will reopen at the start of 2015 but there are other full-time opportunities available to school leavers, through the EY school leavers programme.

HSBC
Students aged 14-18 can apply for HSBC's work experience programme in January 2015 for the chance to experience working life in an HSBC bank or one of its other offices.
